Random Books from the Bookshelf

randombooksfromthebookshelfbanner
Random Books from the Bookshelf is weekly feature hosted by Cookies, Books and Bikes.  This weekly feature was created to showcase the first few paragraphs from books that have been sitting on the bookshelf patiently waiting for their turn to be read.  I’d like to send a big THANK YOU to WonderBunny for letting me use her awesome feature on my site.  Please stop by and visit her blog.  Aside from this cool feature, she also posts great book reviews and shares AMAZING cookie recipes!

I’m deeming today ‘Steamy Books Purchased during a Barnes & Noble Sale’ day.  What?  Yes, that’s the best title I could come up with.  C’mon guys!  I haven’t had my coffee yet.  Cut me some slack.  *mutters*  On to the stash, shall we?

Even mines the requisite white wedding dress, the woman fleeing down the fronts steps of a large, imposing church in downtown Orlando had a definite runaway bride vibe thing going on.  Morgan Webber was minding his own business as he strolled along the sidewalk when she literally slammed into his shoulder, threatening to send them both crashing to the pavement.
Only his bulk and her quick footwork saved them.  She tossed out a muttered apology, evaded his grasp, and darted out into the street.  He watched aghast, wincing at the cacophony of blaring horns and screeching brakes, as she danced between the vehicles.
When she made it safely to the opposite curb, he actually glanced over his shoulder expecting to see a distraught groom in hot pursuit.  But at the top of the steps, the sturdy oak doors, both decorated with large white ribbons, remained firmly closed.

“Ask him AGAIN where the goddamn Serb paras are!  Don’t look at me like that!  That’s a fucking ORDER!!”
“He doesn’t know anything!  How many times to I have to tell you—he’s just a farmer!  Give it up you SICK SON OF A BITCH!!”
The two men shouting at each other had been on opposite sides of the interrogation issue from the moment they’d met three months ago.  Harry Miller thought you could beat the truth out of people, and after the defeats at the Marine barracks in Lebanon and then again at Mogadishu, he was the first one to point out the military annex to the Balkan peace accord.  “We have the authority,” he would remind anyone daring to question his brutality, “to use force if necessary to carry out our responsibilities.”  For Harry that meant coming down like a ton of bricks on anyone who got in his way.

As assignments went, this one was odd.  But as a private investigator, Lily West did what she was hired to do.  Her latest mission was to attempt to break into the museum, test the night security team, and see if they were doing their job.
Easy enough.  She’d been casing the museum for the past week.  The day shift was tight and doing a fine job handling the large crowds coming in to see the traveling Star of Egypt exhibit of artifacts.  The day crew was also busy enough to allow her to wander around and study everything, map it all out, so she’d know what to look for at night.
She’d gotten her answers.  The night crew was severely lax, and the museum’s overall security system sucked.  No one patrolled outside, and the guys mostly sat on their asses in the front lobby and talked to each other instead of making rounds.  Lucky for them, not a damn thing had been going on.

It’s finally here!

Plinky Question of the Day

plinkybanner
The Plinky Question of the Day is a weekly feature I added to the blog to get to know you guys better and vice versa.  Sometimes the questions will deal with books or reading but, most of the time they won’t.  Because, let’s face it, there’s more to us than what we read.

If you could read minds for a day, would you?

Since Deanna and I will be hosting a Sookie Stackhouse discussion for Dead Until Dark tomorrow, I thought this was a perfect lead-in question.  My answer is HELL TO THE NO!  I would be a severe basket case if I had to endure listening to other people’s thoughts all day.  Of course, this is assuming that the question means I don’t have a choice on what I could listen in on.  Even if it means I did have a choice I still wouldn’t want the ability.  I think thoughts are private and should stay that way.  Lord knows I’ve had times where someone upset me or pissed me off and I’ve had a brief moment of really mean dialogue running through my head about them.  I know that’s kind of horrible but, I’m working on it.  Anyway, I’d hate for that person to listen in to that type of inner monologue when it’s not how I feel about them 99% of the time.

How about you guys?  If given the ability, would you read minds for a day?

Authors After Dark 2012

Good morning lovelies!  So it's Thursday, which means we're one day closer to the weekend.  Woo to the hoo!  If my guessing skills are on point, then you're probably scratching your heads because of the title of this post.  But Jen, you say, you haven't even gone to Authors After Dark 2011!  Why the hell are you writing a post about Authors After Dark 2012?!  I assure you I have not lost my mind.  I'm just really excited because Authors After Dark 2012 is going to be held in... *drumroll*

*crowd begins to roar*  New Orleans my friends!  It's pretty damn exciting isn't it?!  I saw the announcement over at Wicked Lil Pixie's blog and damn near fell off of my chair.  So, um, why are you standing there staring at the screen?  Go check out some of the preliminary details by clicking on that fabulous banner.  Who wants to be roomies?  =)

Musical Interlude

Good morning beautiful people!  I normally post reviews/recommendations on Wednesday and Friday (at least I try really hard to) but I'll be preparing for the Sookie Stackhouse re-read discussion.  However, I don't want to leave you empty handed so I'll be posting some music for ya'll to enjoy.  Today we have the musical stylings of Jack Johnson.  I love this man something fierce.  If he wasn't happily married and I was totally off my rocker I'd stalk him.  Anywho, Jack is my go to guy when I want something that's going to put me in a good mood or when I'm stuck in traffic about to kill someone.  Here are some of my favorites:

She’s Getting What Tattooed Where?

What’s up everyone?  Hope your Tuesday morning got started off on the right foot.  I’m probably still trying to get back into the swing of things after the long weekend.  Chances are I’m on my 2nd cup of coffee.  You’re probably asking yourself what that has to do with tattoos.  Well, nothing really.  Just thought you’d enjoy the funny visual of me dragging ass on a Tuesday morning.  What?  It wasn’t really that funny?  Oh, damn it all to hell.  Okay fine onto the reason for today’s post.  I was going through my Google Reader over the weekend and I came across a post by Diana Rowland over at The League of Reluctant Adults that I found very interesting and needed to share with you all.  Not only does she share the cover for the first book in her new series…

mylifeasawhitetrashzombie

Purdy, ain’t it?  I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again, Dan Dos Santos is a friggin’ bad ass.  Oh, sorry.  I distracted myself.  Where was I?  Oh yeah, so not only did she share this cover but, she also said that if her book managed to debut on the New York Times bestseller list she’d get this tattooed on her:

whitetrashzombietattoo

Yes, that would be the same tattoo on the arm of the girl gracing the book’s cover.  Seeing as how I’m a fan of body art, you can see why I couldn’t resist sharing this with you guys.  I love a woman with a big pair of lady balls.  Oh, what?  You don’t believe me?!  See it for yourselves.  Since I’m all for going big or going home I’ve decided to support this cause.  I think you should too.  Which leads me to today’s question:

What goal or reason would make you want to get some ink?

Let the Games Begin!

SookieReadalongBanner

And by games I mean our Sookie Stackhouse re-read!  Both Deanna and I are pretty excited that this show is finally gettin’ on the road.  Hopefully you guys were able to find and and start your copies of Dead Until Dark, or in my case, borrow it back from the co-worker I lent it to.  We’ll be getting together over at Deanna’s blog on Sunday for the first discussion.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Hello beautiful people!  I decided to try out a new Sunday feature.  As you can see from the description above, the lovely WonderBunny from Cookies, Books and Bikes gave me the green light to use her Random Books from the Bookshelf feature.  I decided to dedicate the inaugural post to one of my current obsessions….COWBOYS!  Because seriously, who doesn’t love a guy who knows how to handle a bucking bronco.  *grin*  Here are this week’s featured reads:

Infamous

Prologue

Everyone’s heard the story about Marshal Silas Quinn and the infamous gunfight at the Red Rock Saloon.

A travelogue to the American Southwest says it better than I ever could:

Like the sinking of the Titanic or the Great Chicago Fire, like the burning of Atlanta during the Civil War or the age-old feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys, the legend of the violent showdown between Marshal Quinn and the Kelly Gang in Jubilation, Arizona, in 1898 is known to every schoolchild across this great land.

It is the quintessential story that defines the heroic struggle of good men to tame the wild lawlessness of the Old American West, and although it has been told and retold dozens of times, the drama and tragedy never get old.

Says who?  I’d always kind of hoped that the interest in this tale would finally just fade away, but here it is, the year of our Lord 2010, and some Hollywood types are making yet another motion picture about the hoopla.  This one’s called Quinn, like the man is Cher.

I Love This Bar

All the air escaped Daisy’s lung in a whoosh when the cowboy collapsed on top of her body.  She sucked in air and pushed at the weight, but her arms were pinned.  She opened her eyes to see a head full of dark hair and felt the sharp bone of his nose pressing into her left breast.

He raised his head and looked over at her, his face only inches from hers, his eyes zeroing in on her lips.

Hot damn!  That’s one sexy face, they both thought at the same time.

She shut her eyes and started to lean in for the kiss, then reality hit.  She had fallen flat on her back on the floor of the Honky Tonk beer joint and taken the nearest cowboy down with her.  She popped her eyes wide open and wriggled back away from the sexiest gray eyes she’d ever seen.

Caine's Reckoning

1858:  Texas Territory

He hated the sound of a woman’s scream.  Caine pulled Chaser up short.  The black Apaloosa’s hoofbeats ended in a cadence with Tracker’s and Sam’s horses.  After fifteen years together, there was no guesswork to the men’s moves.  They were a team.

The high-pitched scream came again, cutting through the cold morning air, hovering a desperate moment on the heavy mist before dropping off with eerie abruptness.

Tracker took the blade of grass he’d been chewing from between his teeth.  “Looks like we’ve found them.”

What's the most expensive thing you've ever broken?

Okay so I’m kind of klutzy.  When I say kind of klutzy what I really mean is that I’m super duper klutzy.  I bump into things on a daily basis.  Sooo…I was at my aunt’s house for some sort of family function and she had a beautiful Tiffany (or imitation Tiffany) lamp, much like this one…

lamp

…on one of the tables in the living room.  Well I may or may not have been rough housing with my cousin when I accidentally hip bumped the table this lamp was sitting on.  As soon as I realize what happened my world started to move in slow motion.  I was all like, ‘Hooooollllyyyy shiiiiiii…’  while trying to catch the damn lamp in mid-air.  Unfortunately, I was unable to reach out fast enough to save it.  The lamp crashed to the floor and broke into 4 or 5 pieces.  My aunt was a pretty good sport about it but, I’m pretty sure she would’ve loved to at the very least shake the hell out of me.  I still feel really bad every time I stop by her house and see the scene of the accident.

How about you guys?  What’s the most expensive thing you’ve broken?

Review: Through the Wall by Keri Ford

Through the Wall
Title:  Through the Wall
Author:
  Keri Ford
Genre:  Contemporary, Erotica
Publisher:  Turquoise Morning Press
Publication Date:  December 2010
Series/Standalone:  Novella 1 of the Apple Trail, Arkansas series
Cover Artist:  Kim Jacobs
Who/What/Why/Where:  Saw a really good review by Nikki over at Ramblings from a Chaotic Mind and decide to purchase a copy.

Cover Blurb:
She doesn’t want wild and raunchy, just a little spice…

Stephanie Faulkner listens to her neighbor’s nightly sexcapades through her bedroom wall. What used to make her blush now has her reaching for her vibrator. But she’s had enough self-fulfillment and now wants the real thing.

He wants commitment and long-term, not a quick roll…

The only woman Parker Madison ever wanted for long-term was Stephanie...but she's off-limits. He’s tried to find a substitute but there just isn’t another woman like her. Now that she's available, if he gives her time to get over her ex-husband...will he finally get his long-desired chance?

Short-term doesn't lead to long term. Or does it…?

But when Stephanie digs up the courage to ask Parker for something a little exciting and spicy, he nervously rejects her. Still, she sets out to get what she wants—a little sexcapade of her very own. No commitment. It's just sex, right?  Parker knows he could never be satisfied with having Stephanie temporarily. But as she continues to tempt him and he finds it harder to resist, he begins to think short-term might be better than nothing at all. Unless he can convince her into more.

Review:
I’m really happy I came across Nikki’s review because I absolutely loved this novella.  It was funny (there’s a kitchen scene that damn near made me pee my pants), steamy (any scene involving the main characters hooking up had me fanning myself) and sweet (I couldn’t help but want a HEA).  Best part?  It left me wanting more.  Everything about the story worked for me.  You can’t really ask for more than that, right?

I adored both Stephanie and Parker.  They’re chemistry jumps off the page and it was fun to watch each of them struggle to get what they want.  I enjoyed how Ms. Ford slowly gave us the background behind their relationship.  Once their history is laid out you can’t help but root for a happy ending.  This one gets two thumbs up from me.  I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of this series.

Favorite Lines:

Belated Plinky Question of the Day

plinkybanner

The Plinky Question of the Day is a weekly feature I added to the blog to get to know you guys better and vice versa.  Sometimes the questions will deal with books or reading but, most of the time they won’t.  Because, let’s face it, there’s more to us than what we read.

What songs must you always sing the lyrics out loud to?

Apologies for the tardiness folks.  Yesterday was a day filled with errands and I didn’t have a chance to put my Plinky post together.  Since last week’s question was a bit of a doozy, I figured I’d go easy on you guys this week.  There’s a long list of songs I love to belt out so I’m going to share my top three favorite songs.  As an added bonus, I’m making this a family affair and I’m going to share my boyfriend’s, sister’s and sister’s fiancĂ©'s favorites too.  I’m linking all the songs back to YouTube because I don’t want Blogger to become temperamental and not let me post all the videos.  So here’s our list:

Jen’s Favorites
Break My Stride by Matthew Wilder
Electric Relaxation by A Tribe Called Quest
U + Ur Hand by P!nk

Boyfriend’s Favorites
Power by Kanye West
One Love by Nas
Lose Yourself by Eminem

Sister’s Favorites
I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
Tiny Dancer by Elton John
Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard

Sister’s FiancĂ©'s Favorites
Don’t Stop Believing by Journey
Piano Man by Billy Joel
Anything by Bon Jovi

We are quite the eclectic bunch, huh?  One of the reasons I like sharing space with my sis and her future hubby is because they love all kinds of music and there’s always something interesting playing on the stereo.

Your turn!  What are some of the songs you automatically sing out loud anytime they come on the radio or stereo?

Musical Interlude

So I had a book review scheduled to go up today but, I had an especially tiring kickboxing class last night and couldn't bring myself to put my hands on my keyboard.  I secretly think my teacher is a sado-masochist.  The fact that I did back to back classes probably didn't help either.  *shru...ow*  Since I'm trying to stay true to the whole blog schedule thing I set up, I'm putting up another music video.  This one's going out to Deanna who's mentioned that she's a bit of country music fan.  Not only is this guy sexy but, his voice does things to my insides that I can't even begin to explain.  *fans self*  I leave you with the very delicious Josh Turner and his song Your Man.  Enjoy!

I Totally Knew that Guy was a Werewolf!

I was wracking my brain for some ideas for today’s topic and I decided to do another supes list like the one I did for my Vampire Rockers post.  Except that this time I decided to go with my favorite supe…werewolves.  Like the vamps the weres had to meet certain requirements.  A) They had to have some sort of alpha tendency, 2) They had to be BAMFs (acronym courtesy of On a Pale Star) and C) Some sort of facial hair and/or shaggy hair and/or scruff was preferred (but not necessarily required).  Did I mention contenders got bonus points for being comfortable in their own nakedness?  *grin*  So here’s who made the cut:

Professional Wrestlers
These guys pretty much meet all the criteria.  If they decided to do a big reveal during Wrestlemania I wouldn’t be shocked.  (Shout out to my fellow wrestling lovers Deanna & Offbeat Vagabond)

Batista KGG-000543

John Cena Randy Orton

Top row:  Batista and Triple H
Bottom Row:  John Cena and Randy Orton

MMA Fighters
These mofos step into an octagon to beat the hell out of each other FOR FUN.  If that doesn’t constitute werewolf behavior I don’t know what does.

Brock Lesnar Chuck LidellRampage Jackson 26449

Top row:  Brock Lesnar and Chuck Liddell
Bottom row:  Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Georges St. Pierre

Musicians / Actors
Some of these guys seemed like no brainers.  The others impressed me in their roles as werewolves.  Either way this means more eye candy for you.

Henry Rollins Scott Ian AnthraxJoe underworld-rise-of-the-lycans-003

Top row:  Henry Rollins and Scott Ian (guitarist for Anthrax)
Bottom row:  Joe Manganiello and Michael Sheen

So those were my two cents.  Now I’m interested in yours.  Who wouldn’t shock you with an ‘I’m a werewolf’ announcement?

Review: Wet by Margie Church

wet

Title:
  Wet
Author:  Margie Church
Genre:  Contemporary, Erotica
Publisher:  Noble Romance Publishing
Publication Date:  September 2010
Series/Standalone:  Standalone
Cover Artist:  Fiona Jayde
Who/What/Why/Where:  Read an excerpt over at E. H. on Books and More and decided to give it a shot.  Bought with my own chump change.

Cover Blurb:
Noah and Reagan may be divorced but their passion is far from over.  For the sake of their children, they end up living together until the Navy determines Noah's next assignment.  When the rain falls one night, they get wet in more ways than one.

Special Content Alert: Bondage, Oral Sex, Anal Sex

Review:
Wet was a bit of a mixed bag for me.  I thought the premise was interesting and I enjoyed the smutty scenes.  The story was a tiny bit choppy but, I think what was off was my ability to connect with the characters.  Reagan got on my nerves at times and I’m not all together sure that I bought Noah’s reasons for why he came to the decisions he did regarding their marriage.

This isn’t to say that someone else wouldn’t enjoy the book more than I did.  Aside from the few choppy moments, it’s a well written novella.  If you enjoy your protagonist being a military man and a story about trying to rekindle a relationship’s lost spark then you should give this story a try.

Favorite Quotes:
Though divorced now, her desire for him still smoldered.  She recognized how close her knee was to his balls and considered inching her leg a little higher.

Plinky Question of the Day

The Plinky Question of the Day is a weekly feature I added to the blog to get to know you guys better and vice versa.  Sometimes the questions will deal with books or reading but, most of the time they won’t.  Because, let’s face it, there’s more to us than what we read.

Write a haiku about something that drives you nuts.

So I figured I’d challenge myself (and you guys) with this week’s question/prompt.  Haikus remind me of elementary school.  My 4th and 5th grade teacher would ask us to write haikus for an annual poetry competition that took place at the Dade County Youth Fair.  If we participated we gained free admission to the fair to see where our masterpieces placed in the competition (and to ride the rides of course).  I think my best ranking was 3rd.  Not bad for a 9 or 10 year old, eh?  Enough of the reminiscing.  Here’s a haiku dedicated to one of my biggest pet peeves…

Horns blaring loudly
It’s too early for this crap
Get out of my WAY!

Okay so maybe this wouldn’t rank in a haiku competition but, it’s pretty close to how I feel when I’m stuck in Miami gridlock.

How about you lovelies?  Take a crack at creating a haiku about something that drives you crazy.
