Fangtastic Fridays: Read-Along of Pretty When She Dies

PWSD banner

So there I was hammering away at my Google Reader feed when I noticed that some of my favorite bloggers were going to host a read along for Pretty When She Dies by Rhiannon Frater.  Once I read the book’s description, I knew there was no way I could pass up the chance to get involved.

Pretty When She Dies

Amaliya wakes under the forest floor, disoriented, famished and confused. She digs out of the shallow grave and realizes she is hungry in a new, horrific, unimaginable way.

Sating her great hunger, she discovers that she is now a vampire, the bloodthirsty creature of legend.

She has no choice but to flee from her old life and travels across Texas hoping to escape her creator.

Interested in joining the fun?  Of course you are!  Here’s the gist of how this is going down.  Every Friday in November, Missie, Ashley, Felicia and Amanda will be co-hosting a read along of Pretty When She Dies by Rhiannon Frater in preparation of the release of the sequel Pretty When She Kills.  Wait!  That’s not all.  There’s going to be prizes every week. Here are the details.

Holy crap guys!  It’s here!  It’s finally here!  I’m excited to get this show on the road.  I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to read on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (absolutely insane work schedule) but, I’ll definitely try to make up for it on all the other days.  Here we go…

Plinky Question of the Day

The Plinky Question of the Day is a weekly feature I added to the blog to get to know you guys better and vice versa.  Sometimes the questions will deal with books or reading but, most of the time they won’t.  Because, let’s face it, there’s more to us than what we read.

Are there any reality TV shows you’d try out for?

Why yes there is.  The only reality TV show that I would ever try out for is…

Amazing Race Logo

Because A) I’d get to travel all over the globe with my man and B) the meltdowns we’d have would go down in TV history.  They would be epic people.  EPIC!

Sooo…which reality TV shows would you guys try out for?

Tune in Tuesday: Soundtrack Edition (Underworld Movie Franchise)

TuneInTuesday-soundtracked

This weekly meme is hosted by Ginger at GReads and is meant to showcase another passion: music. Each week you can post an old or new song so that it gains more interest or is discovered by new ears. So let's help Ginger spread our love of music. Oh and don't forget to submit a link to your post over on Ginger’s site by clicking on the banner.

*Ginger decided to host another themed Tune in Tuesday during the month of OCTOBER.  And that theme will be: Favorite Soundtracks.  It can be from a movie, TV show, or musical.  It does not necessarily have to be the theme song for that particular program either.  As long as it was featured in the movie, TV show, or musical then it's fair game!  I can't wait to see what every one comes up with!*

I’m featuring one of my favorite movie franchises today.  I’m a huge fan of all the Underworld movies.  What can I say?  I love me some action packed vampire movies.  Kate Beckinsale can play a pretty bad ass vamp, Scott Speedman is super hot, Rhona Mitra can also play a bad ass vamp and Michael Sheen is one hell of an actor.  Enjoy!

What cereal could you eat three times a day?

I am a huge fan of cereal.  I could seriously eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  There was no way I could narrow it down to just one so here’s my top three choices.

Cocoa Krispies Cocoa Krispies bowl

What can I say?  I’m a sucker for a good snap, crackle, pop. ;)

Lucky Charms Lucky Charms Bowl

Don’t pay any mind to the creepy ass elf on the box.  I promise that this cereal is magically delicious!

Chocolate Cheerios Chocolate Cheerios bowl

You can’t go wrong with a cereal that’s “healthy” AND is made of chocolate.

Joint Review: Black Dust Mambo by Adrian Phoenix

Black-Dust-Mambo

Title:  Black Dust Mambo

Author:  Adrian Phoenix

Genre:  Young Adult

Publisher:  Pocket Books

Publication Date:  July 2010

Series/Standalone:  Book 1 in the Hoodoo Series

Cover Artist:  Steve Stone

Who/What/Why/Where/How:  Jen and I both had the book so we decided to read it together.

Cover Blurb
:

“There will be times, girl, when all your magic ain’t going to be enough, times when it will seem to dry up like mud under the noonday sun, or even make matters worse…”

Kallie Rivière, a fiery Cajun hoodoo apprentice with a talent for trouble, finds herself smack-dab in the middle of one of those times her mentor warned her about when she visits New Orleans to attend the Hecatean Alliance’s annual carnival:  her hard-bodied conjurer hookup ends up dead in her blood-drenched bed.  And he was killed by something that Kallie would never dream of touching—a black dust hex that may have been meant to kill her.

Now Kallie has to use every bit of hoodoo knowledge and bayou-bred mojo she possesses to clear her own name and find the killer—even as that dark sorcerer hunts Kallie and her friends.  But Kallie’s search for the truth soon leads her in a direction she never anticipated—back home to Bayou Cyprés Noir, and to Gabrielle LaRue, Kallie’s aunt, protector, and hoodoo mentor…who is looking more and more like she just might be the one who wants Kallie dead.

Review:

‘Ello ladies and gents.  Rain Maiden (a.k.a. Jen) and I are back with another joint review.  I do believe Rain Maiden picked this one out and I’m so glad she did.  It was an amazing read and to be completely honest it had been sitting on my shelves for waaay too long.  So without further ado, here are our thoughts on Black Dust Mambo.

Jen D.:
I bow down to Adrian Phoenix!  *I’m not worthy!  I’m not worthy!*  She has the ability to kick you in the gut with her stories and leaves you begging for more.  Okay fine perhaps that's a bit violent but, I mean it in an oh so good way.  I've read the first book in her Makers Song series and absolutely loved it.  I had been dying to give this series a try because of the whole hoodoo/voodoo aspect and when Jen asked me if I wanted to read it along with her there was no way I could say no.

Rain Maiden:  I hear ya, total gut buster!  I felt like I was in a paranormal rut and then I went voodoo.  Black Dust Mambo started off with a bang and then as a reader, I was running.  I have no clue what Adrian Phoenix did for homework for Black Dust Mambo, but I bought the whole hoodoo vibe.  I was a bit lost on some of the hoodoo stuff thrown at me, but I just went with it. So what did you think about all the characters running around?  There were a lot of POV's in this story.

Jen D.:  I agree with you on being a bit lost with the voodoo/hoodoo stuff but, it never deterred from my reading experience.  On the contrary, it made me want to look up words and research which I have a thing for anyway.  I'm glad you asked about the alternating POVs.  I loved them!  This style, when done right, gives you a better understanding of the characters and story as a whole.  At least to me.  I know some people don't like this style but, it's right up my alley.  Speaking of POVs and people running amok, let's talk characters.  What'd you think of Kallie?

Rain Maiden:  Yea, the POV style of this story was a breath of fresh air.  I have much love for Miss Kallie and her flying fists.  I have to say my favorite of the bunch was Kallie's BFF Belladonna.  I would loved to get slizzard with those two.  Belladonna gave me the most laughs.  The whole wet boxer contest had Belladonna written all over it.  I enjoyed all the characters in this story. Layne was one hot vessel and I even enjoyed Basil Augustine, that gift wrapped pervert. Your character thoughts?  Any you loved?  Any you hated?

Jen D.:  I too loved Kallie and her flying fists.  Sure, she's a little overly aggressive but, she's loyal to her friends and family and will do just about anything to protect them.  OMG I loved me some Belladonna Brown.  She was funny, sarcastic and FIERCE!  That wet boxer contest was hilarious!  I almost started yelling, ‘TAKE IT OFF!’ while reading that scene.  *sigh*  Something tells me if we get slizzard with these too we'll either end up in jail or in the middle of a bar brawl.  ;)  Either way I’m totally down!  I enjoyed all of the other characters too.  I'm calling shot gun on Layne.  Never thought I'd have the hots for a blond, dreadlocked nomad.  Mmm mmm good!  *Ahem* After I got over that whole couch scene *shivers* Basil Augustine started to grow on me.  At the end of the day I felt bad for him and his situation.  Dallas, although he was pretty hot, was a bit of a douche but, his heart was in the right place I guess.  McKenna was prickly and mean and super alpha female but, once her back story is revealed she started to grow on me too, albeit ever so slightly.  They're quite the motley crew but, they work well together.  So how about them villains?

Rain Maiden:  The villains....well lets just say that I thought I knew who the culprit was behind all the bad juju, but things were not what they seemed.  Can't give too much away but I enjoyed the wrap up in the end.  There were scenes that sure shocked me, like getting wacked upside the head by a two-by-four type shocked.  I definitely had a WTF moment once Basil got all, um, cozy in his new body too. Not to mention that whole ugly scene with Dallas and his throat.  I loved that some of the chapters left you with little cliff hangers.

Jen D.:  Ms. Phoenix definitely has an interesting way of making you think you know who the bad dude is only to pull the proverbial rug from under your feet.  I love when she does that.  Even if it means I land on my face every now and again.  There were definitely some crazy, what in the hell moments.  It's all part of fun of reading her stories though.  I too was freaked out by the whole Basil Augustine, um, exploration thing.  It was all kinds of wrong but, you kind of didn't want him to stop describing his journey, right?  It's okay to admit it.  LOL!  The villains were pretty twisted and diabolical.  Just how I like ‘em.  ;)  I too loved the mini cliffhangers!

Who would we recommend this book to?

Jen D.:  Fans of Adrian Phoenix’ Maker’s Song series, fans of voodoo/hoodoo themes and anyone who likes a story that feels like a rollercoaster ride.

Rain Maiden:  I would recommend Black Dust Mambo to those out there that read a lot of vampire/werewolf stories, but are looking for something different. Black Dust Mambo is light on the romance and rich in voodoo action/murder mystery. This story comes equipped with a wet boxer contest too! Can't go wrong there! After reading Black Dust Mambo, I went straight to book 2, Black Heart Loa, and enjoyed that one even more.

What were some of our favorite lines?

Jen D.:  “She’s the intended victim, not the hexer,” Belladonna said, hands on her hips, leveling a Class One Belladonna Brown Death Glare at the leprechaun.’

Rain Maiden:  “When he got within a hundred yards of you, his goodies withered up like old prunes.”

Rating:

Jen D.:  4.75 out of 5 stars (Let the record show I knocked off .25 stars because I would have loved a glossary.  Yes, I know.  I’m a little spoiled.  *sigh*)

Rain Maiden:  4 out of 5 stars

I was ridiculously happy to see that there were other fans for the movie soundtrack I picked last week.  Seriously ya’ll.  If you haven’t seen Garden State then get on it STAT.  Another excellent movie that I heart to pieces is The Wackness.  If you’re a fan of 90s hip hop, coming of age stories and aren’t easily offended by people smoking pot in movies then you need to check this out sooner rather than later.  Without further ado, I bring you some of my favorite songs from The Wackness soundtrack.

Bout of Books Read-a-thon 2.0

Bout of Books

Button designed by TaraSG

Have no fear ladies and gents.  You are NOT having a flashback or experiencing hallucinations.  Due to popular demand, Amanda from On a Book Bender has brought back version 2.0 of the Bout of Books read-a-thon.  I, for one, am pretty excited.  Not only am I planning on getting some major reading done but, I’m also going to be one of the co-hosts for this event.  Here are the details for this round of reading fun:

  • Bout of Books will run from 12:01am 10/24 through 11:59 pm 10/30 (your time zone)
  • Read as much as you can whenever you can.  I know that this Bout of Books is close on the heels of the Dewey Read-a-Thon; this was an oversight on my part, but if you plan on reading AT ALL, please sign up.  The only person you are competing against here is yourself.  There is no pressure.
  • Bout of Books should be about networking with fellow bloggers in addition to reading.  You were going to read that week anyway, right?  Bout of Books gives you the opportunity to share your reading experience with other readers.
  • Use #boutofbooks on Twitter to update people on your progress and what you are reading.  Feel free to follow me (@BookBender) and your co-hosts (links to follow) for Bout of Books information, but please do NOT @ me (or the co-hosts) with all your updates.  This happened during the last Bout of Books, and it was unnecessary and flooded people’s timelines.  Using #boutofbooks should suffice.  I will try to repopulate the Bout of Books Twitter list.
  • Sign-up (beginning 10/6), the master list of participants, official schedule (up by 10/20), and wrap-up post will all be here on my blog.  I will also give people the opportunity to post their read-a-thon goals and possible books to read.  My Bout of Books “starting line” post will go up on 10/22.
  • Each day during Bout of Books has a different co-host.  They are in charge for the day, and will offer you a place for you to share your daily progress if you wish as well as a challenge.  Please note that co-hosting is an experiment and I am hoping you will give me feedback at the end of the Bout of Books regarding your experience.
  • Your co-hosts (with blog and Twitter links) and the tentative challenge schedule are as follows:

10/24: Shirley @ Creative Deeds (@creativedeeds)
— Guess the Love Triangle Challenge

10/25: Darla @ D for Darla’s Definite Reads (@DforDarla)
— Dream Cast: Book to Movie Challenge

10/26: Joli @ Actin’ Up with Books (@ActinUpwb)
— Book Spine Poetry Challenge

10/27: Erin @ Let’s Evaluate
— Guess the Cover Challenge

10/28: Jen @ Not Now…I’m Reading! (@NotNowImReading)
— Match the UF sidekick with the hero/heroine challenge

10/29: Christi @ Smitten with Reading (@ChristiSnow)
— Bout of Books Babble Challenge (creating a haiku)

10/30: Vivienne @ Muse Books (@musesong)
— Witchcraft in Popular Fiction Challenge

Your form submission will appear on the Master List.  The master list can be used to easily find participants on Twitter or blogs.  Post a LINK to your Twitter, blog, Goodreads, Facebook. @YourTwitterHandle is NOT a link.  The co-hosts and I have been highlighted blue on the list. If you have any questions, please email me using the email button on my sidebar.

Ready to sign up? Head on over to On a Book Bender and fill out the form!  And don’t forget to spread the word!

Plinky Question of the Day

The Plinky Question of the Day is a weekly feature I added to the blog to get to know you guys better and vice versa.  Sometimes the questions will deal with books or reading but, most of the time they won’t.  Because, let’s face it, there’s more to us than what we read.

Are there any book or movie genres that you were surprised to like?

Okay so I have a confession to make.  Up until maybe a couple of months ago the thought of reading YA made me want to roll my eyes into the back of my head.  Teenage angst was something I would rather not have to relive thank you very much.  However, after being book bullied by my Smashy Poo and following some great YA bloggers, I’ve given several books and/or series a try and have not been disappointed (even if there was a love triangle or two which I generally dislike).  Which books were a pleasant surprise, you ask?  Let’s see there was…

The Marbury LensEnclaveHunger Games series

How about you guys?  Which book or movie genres were you surprised to like?
