Movie Review: Super 8

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 move and soon suspect that it was not an accident.  Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Okay so I have a confession to make.  I really didn’t want to watch this movie.  My boyfriend had been talking about it for months.  Months I tell you!  But every time I would see a trailer I wasn’t convinced it was something I wanted to check out at the theater.  How very, very wrong I was.  We went to watch it Friday afternoon and we’re still talking about it today.  The movie was reminiscent of some of my favorite childhood movies.  If you rolled up The Goonies, E.T., and Close Encounters of the Third Kind you kind of end up with Super 8.  I say kind of because although there are elements that remind me of these movies, J. J. Abrams turned it into something that wasn’t a copy cat version of those beloved flicks.  The acting was excellent.  The action sequences rocked.  The suspenseful moments had me jumping out of my seat.  I laughed, I got misty-eyed, I swooned and I sat on the edge of my seat.  If that’s not enough emotional bang for your buck then you, my friend, are hard to please.  So do yourselves a favor and go watch this movie.  Seriously.  You won’t regret it.
